When you're thirsty, you crave liquids.

But some environments -- such as extreme temperatures in industrial settings and on sports fields during summer -- can cause dehydration and a host of medical emergencies including seizures and kidney problems, even death.

In the late 1970s, the Wolek family, of Hobart, began tackling that problem by creating the zero-sugar heat stress beverage called QBlast.

"We were pioneers in this era. QBlast has always been sugar free, and it has been the most effective electrolyte replacement sports drink for more than 30 years," said Leon Wolek, who owns the company. "It's not a sports drink, not an energy drink. It is the original heat stress beverage."

QBlast has 50 calories and one gram of sugar, no caffeine and low salt and is an excellent choice for diabetics, he added.

"It contains Splenda, complex carbohydrates and essential electrolytes in a form and amount that adds to the absorption of fluids," Wolek said. "It was designed by athletes..."

In fact, the company supplied QBlast to the U.S. hockey team that took the gold medal in a contest with the Soviet team during the 1980 Winter Olympics at Lake Placid, NY.

"I have a cap signed by Herb Brooks, the coach of that ‘Miracle on Ice' team," said Wolek, who is an athlete himself and a huge hockey fan. National Football League and National Hockey League teams also have used QBlast, he said.

Today, the company continues to manufacture QBlast at a plant located east of Valparaiso and offers half-liter bottles in fruit punch, lemon-lime, orange and grape flavors via the Internet. Ordering is as simple as logging on to the company's Web site at www.qblast.net and clicking on the shopping cart, Wolek said.

In a partnership with Fed Ex, QBlast can supply a 24-bottle carton or thousands of bottles of the drink on a palette to customers anywhere in the United States, usually within two to three days of the order.

Taste Does the Trick

By Jerry Laws · May 2007

Thirst quenchers are designed to taste best when you are hot and thirsty. Voluntary consumption is one of the best defenses against dehydration.

Why are heat and humidity such a threat to certain workers, such as those who work outdoors or in foundries?
Leon Wolek, founder of Q-Blast (www.qblast.net, 219-962-1866), a sugar-free performance beverage, and inventor of the "Blast Bag," has worked closely with the South Texas Exploration Production Safety Network (STEPS) to test it: Heat and humidity cause sweating, which is the loss of valuable body fluids from within the body.
